On a beautiful day for football the home side took the game to Vale for much of the opening twenty minutes with the visitors defending resolutely before the Creesiders eventually took the lead on 24 minutes after Joe Mcmillan through on goal calmly lobbed the advancing keeper to give the Blairmount Park side the advantage however within a minute as often happens the visitors surged upfield and almost instantly drew level when a fantastic shot from Robbie Simpson on the edge of the area squared the match. The game took a dramatic twist ten minutes from the interval when the home side were reduced to ten men after Robbie Murray was red carded following a heated altercation near the corner flag when both players appeared to exchange blows , a decision that astounded the home supporters. The visitors capitalised on the numerical advantage and took the lead with three minutes to go to the break when a shot from the edge of the area was brilliantly blocked by Euan Drysdale before Josh McVinnie fired the rebound goal ward and it took a wicked deflection off a home defender into the net. The home sides misery was compounded moments later when goal scorer Joe McMillan was dismissed for a second yellow card and Vale took a slender lead but a huge advantage in to the interval.
Despite the obvious disadvantage numbers wise the Creesiders were content to let the visitors retain possession mostly in their own half during much of the second half however the best chances undoubtedly fell to the home side without lady luck smiling on them at several crucial chances. To their great credit Newton at times didn’t appear to be two men down and with five minutes left on the clock a great passage of interplay eventually came to Marc Whyte whose exquisite curling effort shaved the crossbar to deny the home side an unlikely share of the points. The visitors defended resolutely when required and deserved their win and we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.
